Of Historic Importance – Major Thomas Fothringham Captain of The Royal & Ancient 1968 Owned Golf Clubs (2) - features a Robert Forgan of St Andrews c1885 long nose play club in black stained beechwood showing the ‘POWF’ mark to the crown below the maker’s name, the head measures 5 ½” x 1 1/8” x 2 1/8” and measures 44 ½”, maker’s details below the full length hide grip and underlisting and showing a stamp mark ‘restored by Lauri Auchterlonie’ below; together with a Robert Forgan of St Andrews light stained beechwood driver c1875 with central leather face insert, head measures 5 ½” x 1 1/8” x 1 7/8” and 44” length with the maker’s stamp and address below the original hide grip with thickened underlisting (2). These clubs belonged to Major T S Fothringham Captain of the R&A in 1968 – formerly the property of David Laing Burn (Member of the R&A and Union Clubs) who with Mrs Robert Boothby established the Ladies Golf Club in 1867 and selected its course ‘The Himalayas’, given by his descendants (who lived at 58, South Street, St Andrews) to their cousin Major Thomas Fothringham on his election as Captain of the R&A, label attached to shaft ‘For The Captain, may it still hit far & straight, From all of us at Fifty Eight’
